Ebay, Etsy - Experience selling on these?

Thu Sep 24, 2009, 5:26 PM
So, it's been suggested to me that I try selling my artwork and Enchanted Names on sites like Ebay or Etsy. I have my personal website, however the traffic flow at these sites is mega butt loads higher, and would help my name get out there more~ in theory.

Has anyone sold their artwork through either of these sites? Pros/cons of either?

I haven't sold artwork, but I have sold some stuff I made on Etsy.

It's a nice site, it costs .20c to list an item, and I think that's all for fees. The community is pretty awesome too.

I'd avoid ebay. It's a pain in the ass to list stuff (I haven't actually listed anything, but I was going to and it was so confusing, I just said f' it.)

I've never listed, but I've had good experiences buying from e-bay.

Just had one of my other watched artists actually pull her stuff from Ebay after some advice from other artists on Ebay not being the best of places to sell art. Not sure all the stuff that she was told other than legal matters with fan art. This was her short journal ( [link] ) entry about taking them down, if you wanted more detail I'd say to ask Bri by a note as she hasn't publicly said anything beyond what I've said.

The thing that I noticed in the past is that you may have to be careful there as I have seen some people's art (fan and otherwise) being sold there and not by the artist. I only saw these after an artist pointed it out. Ebay as I remember at the time was not quick to take down the item(s) because of how much proof they wanted that it wasn't the artist who was auctioning them off.

Short is that it may get you traffic but it could give you unwanted traffic-ers as well.

Yeah, I saw that Bri-chan took down her fanart from Ebay due to legal matters. I'll have to send her a note and see if she has any other experience with Ebay...or it she had just started.

Yeah, I actually did decide to try Etsy~ I have a handful of stuff up. I've been cruising the forums on how to help get exposure there so you're stuff will sell. We'll just see if stuff sells. :ninja:

I don't think I've had a bad experience buying from E-bay, though it has been years since I actually purchased from there. I just have a bad taste in my mouth from E-bay because oh...oh wow...it's been 8 years now...but 8 years ago my Disney Princess chibis were stolen, turned into Disney pins (like the kind you pin to a shirt), and included the McDonald's Arch and the Coke-Cola bottle on it. I got one lister to take them down when I told them I was the artist of those chibis and did NOT give permission for them to use the artwork, but when I actually submitted a request to E-bay to get any and all future pins off the site, I was refused because I was not Disney, McDs or Coke. I bought from stuff before then from E-bay, but not since then. So I'm sort of at a do I shrug my shoulders at the past and just try it, or continue my "Ebay sucks!".

From what it read this was her first time trying but she took it down after advice from some other artists... least that's what I thought I read... I'm a little tried at the moment and debating sleep ;P
