And the Showers continue...

Thu Apr 30, 2009, 7:46 AM
Well, Joe got the basement and attic leaks fixed (or so we think, guess we'll find out in the next big storm!) however whilst in the attic Joe found something interesting...

So, we have this third bathroom in our house that we never use. It gets used to clean the birds cages, but that's it. During the spring time sometimes there is this "something dead and decaying" smell that comes from the bathroom. You can only smell it when you're IN the bathroom, and well...since the smell isn't always there and since we hardly use it, the smell has been a nuisance, but we always forget about it because it's not constant.

When Joe was in the attic I asked him to make his way to that side where said smell is coming from and just check it out, see what in the world is dead over there and how did it get in. Joe found several things...

A birds nest in the insulation (with eggs!) next to a pipe.

The pipe is our dryer pipe and SHOULD be connected to the side of the house so the heat and lint goes out.

It's not.

Instead this dryer pipe is laying right next to a shorter pipe that leads outside the house, this is the short pipe where the dryer pipe needs to be connected!!! Joe said from looking at it, it has NEVER been connected. It looked like the pipe needed to be cut a bit and then it could easily be connected. Thus, the conclusion is SOMEONE didn't finish their job.

So what does this mean?

For the past 3 years we've lived in the newly constructed house dryer lint has been sprayed on the wall/corner of the attic where the dryer pipe is pointed. The walls are COVERED! I'm not an expert on house codes and what not~ but Joe is sure that lint covered walls is a fire hazard.

So, we now know where the birds are coming from, they're getting in via that unconnected pipe. Joe's going to call the builders of this house (once he's back from TDY, he's better at conveying his anger in a civil tone than I am, I'd babble and probably feel bad and cry~ go me) and tell them to fix this ASAP. According to our building contract we have to give the builders 90 days to fix the issue and then we can contact a lawyer if nothing is done. I'd really rather they fix it, clean out the lint so we don't have to go to a lawyer.

Oh the joys of owning a house~

And yes, new art~ coming soon to an update near you!!

Oh goodness.....I'm glad we rent an apartment. lol.
Now we just need the complex to fix our broken dishwasher and we'd be set.

Yeah, it's always an adventure when you own a house and if something breaks YOU get to fix it! I'm just glad that my husband is fairly handy (He worked at Home Depot for a year or two and he learned a lot during his time there), and then between my handy man Dad, my father-in-law, and brother-in-law~ if something breaks we can go to one of them for help on how to fix it.

When we have our dream house built (which we're designing together) it will be built MUCH better than this cookie cutter townhouse. And we'll be inspecting it SO much more during the building process than we did this house when we purchased it (It was our first time buying a house...so we've learned a lot about what to look for NEXT time!)

Now, if only the economy gets better so by the time we're ready to sell we can make a profit off of the townhouse when we sell it! ::rallies behind the Obama administration::

Ah, yeah. My boyfriend worked with his dad building houses for a while, so he's handy too. It's kinda killing him that we signed an agreement to not fix anything in the apartment. XD
Cookie cutter houses are kinda meh anyway, but self-designed houses are always nicer.
