Disney 'Princess' Revolt by GargoyleGoddess21 Disney 'Princess' Revolt by GargoyleGoddess21
This picture has a story to it... several stories actually. First, I did this picture about in 2003. I was working at the Disney Store and we have the *Princess Collection*. Back then the Princess Collection included Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, and Jasmine (it's expanded since then). So, I started thinking about the OTHER Disney princesses who never get any attention. Some of them actually having the status of princess, others just were the Disney heroine of the movie. But, some of the girls in the *Disney Princess Collection* aren't Princesses, perhaps they married INTO power, but they weren't a princess. So, my mind started pondering about a Disney *Princess* Revolt, and this is what came of it. ^^ Characters from Left to Right: Anastasia (yes, I know she's not Disney, tell that to the people who kept coming into the Disney store asking for an Anya doll!), Pocahontas, Mulan, Eilonwy, Jane, Kida, Esmeralda, and Megara. This picture was first seen on Elfwood in 2003...

Now, story #2. Characters from this picture (and another one Disney chibi pic I did) were STOLEN and turned into fradulent Disney/Coke/McDs pins, and sold on Ebay. I discovered them one night whilst cruising Ebay, around... Nov/Dec of 2003. I was flabbergasted so to speak, and worked on getting the pins not sold on Ebay. I also took the Disney chibi pics down off of Elfwood, much to the dismay of the fans who loved them, but I didn't want any more characters stolen.

However times have changed.

I don't shop on Ebay anymore (due to some prior experiences with them, one of the pertaining to THIS thief incident) so I don't know how successful I was at having the Disney chibi pins (or as they are called "Young Disney Princesses" off of Ebay. However, I don't think I should hide the chibis anymore. They are MY fanart of Disney characters. I DON'T own the characters, I did these drawings for pleasure and fun. AND NO ONE ELSE has the right to steal MY artwork of DISNEY'S characters and make a profit off of them. Thus, I want the chibis out there, and I want people to know that art thieves stole MY artwork. Disney, Coke, nor McDs probably know about this, with as much as their big companies make, my stolen artwork of Disney characters is probably an insignificant expense. However, if there IS anyone out there with hookups to the big wigs of these companies (particularly Disney), I would love to tell them about this. Since this happened 3 years ago I know the theive's trail is long gone , when I tried to find out the whos, whys and wheres from sellers they claimed ignorance. But I want the people to know, and I want people to enjoy this piece, it brought a lot of laughs to those who saw it on Elfwood. And that, my friends, was the reason I did it to begin with...

Anya belongs to 20th Century Fox; Pocahontas, Mulan, Eilonwy, Jane, Kida, Esmeralda, and Megara belong to Disney

Wait, why is Mulan here if she actually is in the DP line up?

When I did this back in.... 2001? Way back when, she wasn't part of the DP line. They only had 6 at the time - Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Snow White, Aurora, and Cinderella.

Ah, now it makes sense. I don't really listen to disney's word anymore anyway. In my eyes, every Disney female lead is a part of the lineup.

The response to Anastasia's sentence is because she and Wendy Darling look alike (you know by the hair, and the clothes they are attired in). Also, this is a very good piece of art.

Yeah, if I were to redo this idea I'd put Anastasia in a different dress - either her yellow dress or the dark blue one she wore to the play.  And thank you. :)

LOL oh my god you made me search for who princess Eilonwy is and then I remembered I loved that movie actually. It was so very different from any other Disney movie at it's time and honestly still is. Pretty dark and I don't know if it was a success or not but scinematically I think it's a bit underrated.

Good pic, you had me thinking and searching xD

Haha, glad you enjoyed it so much!

Yeah, Black Cauldron is very different from all the other Disney movies around that time. Money wise, it was considered a flop in the box office. But they did play around with new technology (the Cauldron Born coming alive was some...I think it was holographic technology), and I think that aspect is not appreciated as much as it should.

It was definitely an interesting experience. I remember being so mad that I had been stolen from, but also a bit of pride in an "Oh wow...they thought this was good enough to steal", and also very violated - I mean, I had been stolen from!! So yeah, the emotional waves you go through. ^_^* Thank you for the comment!

It's a shame The Black Cauldron WAS a flop, because in all honesty, I don't think it was that bad. I mean, okay, I wouldn't exactly put it in the top 10, but it was far from terrible. The world they made was interesting, the animation's very beautiful in terms of fantasy settings, it broke most Disney conventions, and it had by far one of the most intimidating Disney baddies of all: The Horned King! Side note: John Hurt should voice act more often, he's pretty good at it.

There is definitely a lot of potential in the film, it just didn't quite make it to that standard Disney holds for their films. But you are right, it broke a lot of Disney conventions and was a major experiment on many levels - a darker fantasy world, experimenting with some holographic technology with the Cauldron Born. I think what really did not help it was how long it was in production, and how many times it changed hands and people in charge "hacked away" at things, rearranged ideas, and then said "Okay, so I hate all this, redo this, and oh yeah... it needs to be fixed by tomorrow" type deadlines. I obviously don't know all the details to the behind the scenes production, but I've read a bit about it and that's the general vibe about it.

Makes sense; usually a film in a lot of development hell will end up a flop; be it Little Nemo (which in retrospect has similar issues as The Black Cauldron the more I think about it), the neutering of one's senses that is Catwoman, and the king of them all; the Thief and the Cobbler. Though thankfully, that last one has been given a much needed revitalization with the Recobbled Cut that is slowly giving it the TLC Richard Williams tried so desperately to give it when it was being made.

Oh wow... I remember watching Little Nemo. I had it on VHS, my parents may even have it still... maybe. O_O

I never watched Catwoman, the people didn't like it, so I decided I didn't have to see it. So I can say much on that, but I do remember the Thief and the Cobbler! I remember being so fascinated by the animation stylings when I watched it. I have not watched the Recobbled Cut though.

It's been years since I've watched Little Nemo or The Thief and the Cobbler. It makes me want to find them and rewatch them, to analyze them from a story telling and artist perspective now.

I couldn't agree more- Black Cauldron has a lot of good things and I remember how impressed I was when I saw it in my teenage years. I recently rewatched it (almost 25 years later!) and it still holds up really well.

Disney pretty much tried to do the opposite of their usual fare; that's probably the reason people disliked it.

I looked up Eilonwy because I didn't know who she was. She looks a lot and I mean a lot like Sleeping Beauty but she's actually from The Black Cauldron. Which I've never heard of before. My Dad saw the pictures of her on Google and was like 'That's Sleeping Beauty' but then he saw the video titles and was like 'what?' which was my reaction as well.

Yeah, I first learned about the Black Cauldron in a Disney book that had a listing of all the Disney animated features up to that year. This book was published in the late nineties, because I think Hercules was the last movie listed. And when I came across The Black Cauldron I was flabbergasted! I'd never heard of this Disney film! Why had I never heard of this film?!?! After investigating I found out more about the history and how it didn't do so well in the box office, so it had been pushed under a rug basically.

I'd say The Black Cauldron was a flop then. But it is a real classic now. It just took time to get a following. Imagine a live action version of that. The Horned King would look awesome/scary as hell if done right.

Yeah, it didn't get received well at the theater from people when it first came out. Also the movie was expensive to make, and didn't do well sales wise at the box office, so it was financially a flop. Heck yeah, with the technology we have now - the Horned King would be darn impressive! And scary.

She's from The Black Cauldron - it came out in 1985. It's not very well known, and it didn't do well at the box office. But don't tell Eilonwy - she would get mad at that!
